How to Lose Weight | 3 Simple Healthy Eating Tips

I’ve been asked many times how to lose weight. Now, I’m not a doctor or a dietician, here are my three best pieces of advice based on personal experience. Hope they help! 🙂

I’m a skinny guy. That means many martial artists have asked me how to lose weight. Of course, I’m not a doctor or a dietitian, so my advice is based solely on my personal experience. So, in that spirit, here are three simple eating tips that might help you lose weight.

Tip #1: Food first, fitness second. Let’s say you work out every day. That’s seven workouts per week. Now, let’s say you eat three meals a day. That adds up to 21 meals per week! Three times the number of workouts.

So, which one affects bodyweight more– your workouts or your eating habits?

The answer is even more obvious when you consider that MOST people don’t work out 7 days a week and add snacks between meals. That means many people are likely shaping their body three to five times a week through exercise and 28 to 35 times through what they’re eating.

So, if you want to see a change in your body, start by cleaning up your diet. Food first, fitness second.

Tip #2: Put it on your body. If I put a pie right up next to my face, I’ll probably eat it. That’s because my eyes, my nose, and my tongue all tell me the pie is good. But if I put that pie down by my stomach, I don’t get the same craving. That’s because my stomach can’t see, can’t smell, and can’t taste. It just wants fuel. Nutritious fuel.

So, instead of putting food up to your face, put it down by your belly. Imagine it sitting inside your body. Do you really want that plate of fat and sugar in your stomach? Probably not. Listen to your body, not your tongue!

Tip #3: Slow down. Let’s say you want some ice cream. How long will it take for you to satisfy that craving? I’m not asking how much ice cream it will take, I’m asking how LONG it will take.

If you typically spend 15 minutes eating a full pint of ice cream, can you also spend 15 minutes only eating half a pint? YES! Just slow down. Put the spoon down between every mouthful. Or take a sip of water or a deep breath. Maybe instead of swallowing as fast as you can, roll the ice cream around in your mouth a little longer so you can savor the flavor.

Slowing down will also give your stomach time to get the message to your brain that it’s full. If you eat faster than your stomach can communicate, you fall into a satiety delay. Then you end up stuffed even when you tried not to eat too much.

So, slow down. If you do, you’ll probably enjoy your food more and eat a lot less.

Remember this– food is just like martial arts…you have to figure out what works for you. So, listen to your body and keep experimenting!
