Dollar Tree French Onion Soup (Made From Scratch) | Trying Campbells Flavor Up from Dollar Tree

Full written recipe:

Serves 2

Irish Soda Bread

Makes 1 loaf, which makes 1 bread bowl, to make a 2nd loaf double the recipe then form into two balls prior to baking

1 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of vinegar

Mix together and set aside for 5 minutes (substitute for buttermilk)

2 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Sift together in a bowl and stir in milk a little at a time until a dough ball forms. Try not to make the dough too wet or too dry, adding more milk and flour as needed to get to the right consistency.

Form into a dough ball, add to a parchment lined baking sheet, and cut a + into the top with a sharp knife

Preheat oven to 450 degrees with a metal pan inside the oven, add 1/2 cup of water to the pan to create steam. Add your bread into the oven and bake for 20 minutes. allow to cool completely.

French Onion Soup:

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
3 cups of sliced onions (I used the frozen pepper stir fry and just separated the peppers from the onions by hand)
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
2 to 3 cups of beef broth
1 tablespoon of caramelized onion Flavor Up

In a pot, add oil and onions, saute on medium low heat for 25 to 30 minutes until onions are all evenly golden brown in color. Time is your friend here, you don’t want to speed this along to prevent burning the onions. Add 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes. then slowly add in beef broth, and add Flavor Up (if desired). Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes until thickened to your desired consistency.

Finishing the soup:

I cut the top off of my bread, and carved out the inside. I cubed the top portion that was cut off and tossed it in some oil and pepper. I baked this at 400 degrees until the bread was golden brown. Then I shredded a small amount of mozzarella and cheddar cheese. I added some cheese to the bottom of my bread bowl and baked until the cheese was melted. I poured in my soup, topped with some of my crispy bread chunks, and a little more shredded cheese. Broil this for just a minute or two until the cheese is melted.

Enjoy!
